Downtown Denver Lunchtime ViPR workouts!

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Earlier this year, I was introduced to another FUN new workout!  My trainer and now good friend Jamie Atlas originally introduced me to the weighted ViPR logs and the variety of exercises that you can do with them at his studio called Bonza Bodies located downtown Denver.  Jamie is a Master Trainer for ViPR and uses them regularly in his studio through-out classes.

Earlier in the summer, Jamie partnered with PTontheNet Master Trainer Nate Fryer to hold an outdoor ViPR workout at one of our great downtown Denver parks and ever since then I’ve been HOOKED!

Is the ViPR workout THAT unique?  REALLY?  Actually… it IS!  However… I’ll admit, I’m pretty easy when it comes to getting me to join in a GROUP workout!  If it’s effective and FUN and even MORE important… SOCIAL?  Then I’m IN!    And PTontheNet has hit ALL of these points this summer!

Every 2-3 weeks through-out the summer they have held a FREE ViPR workout at Confluence Park downtown Denver.  So each time they have held an event, my girl Sara and I dash out of the office and head down to the park!  What’s the draw?  GORGEOUS Colorado sunny days, an AWESOME sweaty workout and GREAT peeps!  We LOVE to get outside at lunchtime and get in a great workout with other fun people!  When we first started going, we didn’t know anyone there, but now each time we go, we get to know a few more new people and get to re-connect with other Denver peeps that also love fitness fun!

If you’d like to know more, just hit up www.PTontheNet.com or watch my “LIKE” page on facebook!  I try to pass along the invites as I receive them!

Next FREE summertime noon ViPR work-out is at Commons Park on Wednesday, September 7th… Come join in the fun!

SNOW SHOW Week in Denver 2011

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I have to start by telling you that the S.I.A. Snow Show has previously been held yearly in Las Vegas… until last year, 2010, when Denver, Colorado hosted it for the first time!  And once I learned about it and what it was – basically a trade show for people within the snow industry… I decided I just HAD to find a way IN!  But the deal is, it’s for people within the industry… not your average jane without credentials.   I work in an office downtown Denver literally just a few blocks down the street from the Convention Center where it is held.  As I walked by and even went into my local board shops and chatted with people to learn more about it… I just wasn’t able to find an “IN”.

So this year, I knew it was coming and watched industry tweets while trying to learn more about the Snow Show as well as some of the events involved through-out the week.  I didn’t have a foolproof plan.  But again, decided to be more open about wanting to get in… with anyone… instead of just peeps in my office ;-)

Then,  a few weeks ago,  driving in to work, I saw an ad up on the Convention Center about an upcoming event… DENVER BIG AIR!!!  Are you kidding?  I LOVE this stuff!  And we have an event actually coming in to downtown Denver.  So naturally, I checked out the info and sent it out to my office!  Then discovered it was going to be built at Civic Center Park right down the street the other direction from my office!

2 weeks out from the event, the build began, and I’ve been ALL ABOUT it!  On our lunches, my friend Sara and I have been walking over to the build site to watch the progress each day.  It’s been super fun to watch it come together, to hear the buzz within downtown about it, and then see it all go down both nights with the ski competition Tuesday night and then the boarder competition Wednesday.  It truly made me feel so proud of Denver!

While teaching my Body Pump class Tuesday night I found myself talking about the Denver Big Air event and I got a couple of giggles from a gal over on the side of the room.   Quite honestly, I get giggles for a variety of reasons, so didn’t think too much of it, but after class she came up to me and said, “I couldn’t help but giggle when you were talking about the event downtown because I’m involved with that – with the safety team.”   We talked more about it and the week’s upcoming events and as usual, I got all excited just talking about it!   She said, “What do you do?  How do you know so much about it all?”  And I said I’m just a snowboarder and enthusiast of all things around it.  I just love spreading the word about things that I love and think are super cool!   I mentioned that I am on a mission to one day get IN to the Snow Show!  She eventually told me that she also works for Red Bull and that she may have a possibility of getting an extra pass in to S.I.A.

WHAT???  I’m not gonna lie… I got a little excited inside the second that she said that… but also realized that the reality of that happening was a pretty slim chance.  Nonetheless, I said, if something should come up, feel free to contact me through the gym.  COOL!  It was super cool to chat with her and learn a little more background to the events, and I really did walk away feeling like we would meet up again sometime down the road… but no time soon…

BUT… GUESS WHAT???  She called me today and said that she was planning on going in to the show and would like to invite me to be her guest to come along with her!!!

Um, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I tell you just how flippin’ excited I am???  Okay, so you probably get it… and maybe you don’t… maybe you’re like, “so what?  what’s the big deal???  It’s just a trade show”

Yeah, well, it’s a trade show that revolves around SNOW SPORTS and all that it entails!  And P. flippin’ S. - if you already know me, you may know I have a little addiction to finding the funnest, cutest snow-gear out there!  And I also take pride in the fact that many of my friends as well as only acquaintances contact me for info on buying fun, functional and fashionable snow gear!  So YES!  I’m pretty stoked to get this opportunity to go INSIDE tomorrow afternoon and see NEXT YEAR’S GEAR!!!

So, stay tuned… I hope to be tweetin’ and postin’ with some pics tomorrow!

Job Seekers Fitness Event – Physical Fitness

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

I had the priviledge of being a part of a panel for a Job Seeker event locally here in Denver that revolved around FITNESS in ALL areas to be balanced while on the job hunt.  The panel was comprised of a group of experts on the following: Financial Fitness, Physical Fitness, Mental Fitness, Emotional Fitness, Spiritual Fitness and Professional Fitness.  I had a limited time to speak on the PHYSICAL FITNESS aspect and it’s value in the midst of being unemployed.  The time went by so fast… that immediately I realized I wouldn’t be able to squeeze in all of  the things I had hoped to share.  So I thought the next best thing would be to re-cap on what I did say as well as what I didn’t get to!

I know from experience how easy it is to get discouraged and to find yourself sitting on the couch with your computer on your lap for HOURS on end and then to look up at the clock and realize that it’s the end of the day already and your significant other is coming home soon and you have NOTHING to show for your day!  It perpetuates feelings of guilt, shame and resentment and ultimately a negative energy in your home.

It’s so easy to alienate yourself and hide inside your own personal bubble,  to hide away and find yourself alone during this process.  Instead, it’s vital to  stay connected with your friends as well as other networking social events.   GET OUT and DO SOMETHING… ANYTHING!  It doesn’t have to cost money… and it will pay back huge dividends because you were able to have a release and come back with a fresh mind.

Think of when you were working full time… what was your excuse then for not working out?

“I don’t have the time!”  Am I right?

In addition, what was your excuse then for running through the drive-thru or stopping and getting a ridiculously high calorie, self-sabotaging meal… because you didn’t have time to go to the store, come home and take the steps to prepare a healthy dinner?

Again, “I don’t have the time!”

SO…….!  THIS is your TIME!   Seize THIS as YOUR OPPORTUNITY to set aside time to to better yourself while creating healthy patterns of exercise and creating healthier meals.    It’s actually a fun little challenge to yourself to become the most fit you’ve ever been!  Not only in mind, spirit and professionally… but physically!  When you look better – you feel better – when you feel better – natural, true confidence simply exudes from you effortlessly and you will be seen as someone that is driven and committed and someone that simply can’t be passed up for the right position!

When we are physically fit, we walk taller, with pride and with confidence.  We are in turn not only nicer to those around us, especially our loved ones, but we draw others to us.  Who ISN’T looking for that in an employee?

Motivation

What motivates you?  What inspires you?  What kinds of things do you like to do to be moving your body?

What I think is SUPER fun, you might think is silly or boring!  And vice versa… so I can’t tell you to all come in to my gyms and come hit my kickboxing class and you’re life will be renewed!  Because that’s not necessarily true!   You have to find your “soul-mate” work-out.  If you hate running, you shouldn’t commit to running at the gym every day.  If you hate being outside, then you should find something indoors that you can do.

Some people say you only need to work-out  2-3 times a week and for only 10-15 minutes.  I say… GREAT!  …TO START… but then… you should be adding on each week until you are doing something at LEAST 5 days a week and up to at least 30 minute work-outs and continuing to build on that!

What moves you?  List three moving activities that you enjoy doing where you can actually break a sweat:

1.

2.

3.

Accountability is KEY!  I run 90-Day Challenges with many of the various workouts that I love for other people that are doing it on their own but in tandem with others doing the same workouts.  And the LOUDEST CRY that I hear when we are nearing the end of the 90 days of  a challenge is, “PLEASE CAN WE CONTINUE THIS GROUP WHEN THIS CHALLENGE IS OVER?  It is what motivates me and encourages me.  I know I have to check in with people and so I do it!”  It is this type of accountability that makes ALL the difference!

ACCOUNTABILITY – find people that will meet up with you somewhere to do something active with you.

1.

2.

3.

Plan of action:

  1. You’ve decided on a few things that you can do to get yourself moving – SCHEDULE THEM on YOUR CALENDAR
  2. You’ve narrowed down a few people that you can ask to help to keep you accountable – TALK to THEM and get them on board with you – find someone here!
  3. DRESS THE PART!   The first thing in the morning when you get up – put on your workout clothes.  More likely NOT to make excuses if you’re already dressed for it!
  4. TELL THE WORLD  Put it on your calendar AND post it to your FACEBOOK,  LinkedIN AND TWITTER!  The more people you tell, the more accountable you are.
